Discover the main differences between PIS and PASEP
Brazil is one of the countries with the best labor policies in the world. Therefore, PIS and PASEP are part of the benefits given by the government to workers. Incidentally, the PIS or Social Integration Program works for those who worked between 1971 and 1988.
That's because at that time companies deposited an annual amount in savings. PASEP, on the other hand, works in a very similar way. In this way, in today's article we will show you the difference between the two. Keep reading and understand better!
What is PIS and PASEP and how does it work?
As we mentioned at the beginning, the PIS or Social Integration Program is a benefit for those who worked in a registered manner in the period between 1971 and 1988. Therefore, at that time, deposits were made proportional to the length of service. That is, a very similar way to how the FGTS works.
In this way, the PIS was a form of contribution by the employer in relation to the employee's working time. However, currently PIS is no longer paid. In this sense, the benefit has already completed the transition to the FGTS.
The PASEP has exactly the same function and objective as the PIS. The only difference between the two is that PASEP is exclusive to public servants. In this way, instead of a private company making the contribution, it is the government itself.
Finally, the Federal Government released the money to those who worked between 1971 and 1988. That is, those who did not redeem it at that time had a new chance to recover the benefit. But in 2019 was the last time the government released it. In addition, they could only withdraw workers who are retired, or over 60 years old, or with a serious illness.
Moreover, currently the PIS and PASEP have become a salary bonus benefit. In this way, the registration is used to consult this benefit. In addition, the two benefits could also be redeemed with the quotas, as mentioned above.
What are the criteria?
In short, the criteria for receiving benefits related to PIS and PASEP are almost always the responsibility of the employer. This is because enrollment in PIS and PASEP, for example, is carried out at the time of hiring. See below the criteria to receive the benefits:
- Have registered with PIS/PASEP for at least 5 years;
- Having received an average remuneration of up to two minimum wages;
- Worked at least 30 days for a legal entity in the base year;
- Have data in the Annual Social Information List or eSocial (employer responsibility).
In addition, to receive PIS quotas, you also need to meet some requirements. Mainly because the quotas are only paid to those who worked with a portfolio between 1971 and 1988. Find out who can receive:
- people over 60 years of age;
- retirees;
- in the case of military personnel, people transferred to paid reserve;
- people with disability;
- elderly people with disabilities;
- carriers of some serious diseases such as Cancer, AIDS and others listed in the specific ordinance.

What is the PIS/PASEP value?
Basically, the value of PIS/PASEP refers to the value of the salary bonus. Therefore, we will explain to you how the calculation of this benefit works.
Thus, the allowance is calculated proportionally to the time worked in the base year. In this sense, if you worked every month of the base year, you are entitled to receive the maximum amount available. In addition, it is worth remembering that this amount is equivalent to the minimum wage established by the government in the base year.
What is the difference between PIS/PASEP and salary allowance?
In principle, the PIS/PASEP are practically the same as the salary bonus. However, when we look at the details, we see that they are a little different. In summary, to consult and withdraw your salary allowance, you must have a PIS registration. For this reason, many people confuse one benefit with the other. But in the end, they are almost complementary.
So, what is the difference between PIS and PASEP?
In general, the main difference between PIS and PASEP is who pays the contribution. In other words, in PIS, private companies pay. With PASEP, the public bodies make the contribution. In addition, PIS is paid by Caixa Econômica Federal and PASEP by Banco do Brasil.
In addition, to withdraw the benefit, contact the bank for each benefit directly. For example, with Caixa there are three ways to withdraw the benefit:
- Account credit for workers who are account holders at Caixa;
- At ATMs or lottery outlets;
- In person at Caixa Econômica Federal branches.
In this sense, to withdraw the PASEP benefit, it is necessary to go to Banco do Brasil. However, as we mentioned, the PIS and PASEP funds were transferred to the FGTS. Therefore, you need to request the quotas together with the FGTS.
So now you know the difference between PIS and PASEP! That way, just understand if you can receive the benefit. By the way, in the recommended article below we talk about how you can do to receive!
