1. Garrincha

Before we talk about the rich Brazilians who lost almost everything and who are still alive, living with their critical financial situation, how about remembering some who are already gone and left behind debts to their heirs?! One of them, for example, is the soccer player Garrincha, who performed miracles on the fields, as well as in his financial life. After all, it can only be a miracle to make so much money and still lose it.

Victim of liver cirrhosis, Garrincha died in the city of Rio de Janeiro on January 20, 1983. However, the eternal “angel with crooked legs” of Botafogo and the Brazilian national team died practically bankrupt. He lost money every way possible: cheated by manager, women and booze. At the end of his life, he had nothing and lived on the help of friends.

2. Chico Anysio

In the list of the greatest comedians in Brazil, there is no doubt that you will find the name of Chico Anysio. However, you are very wrong if you think that the eternal teacher of “Escolinha do Professor Raimundo” is only present on the list of comedians, as he is also on our list of rich Brazilians who lost almost everything.

Died on March 23, 2012 at the age of 80, Chico Anysio left behind huge debts and not a fortune, as one might imagine. According to Malga di Paula, the comedian's widow, Anysio got into debt as a result of a somewhat unusual addiction: horses.

He had 300 animals, and the cost to feed each one was R$1,500/month. Other than that, the comedian had other expenses, such as ex-wife's pension, allowances for children and grandchildren. To cover all his costs, Anysio ended up selling everything we had, spending all the money he had invested, taking out loans and acquiring a bunch of debts that remained, after his death, for the heirs.

3. Reginaldo Rossi

Who doesn't remember the singer Reginaldo Rossi and his eternal hit “waiter, here, at this bar table, you've had enough of listening to hundreds of love affairs”, right? Sadly, the artist passed away on December 20, 2013 as a result of late-discovered lung cancer. But did you know that he also died poor, leaving behind several debts? So it is!

According to his son, Roberto Rossi, the king of brega died without money and with debts due to gambling addiction. The heir, who now works as an Uber driver to survive, said he was surprised by the lack of funds after the singer's death. “When my father passed away, my mother and I looked through the accounts, but there was nothing, nothing, nothing,” he said.

4. Eliana Tranchesi

One of the biggest empires in the Brazilian fashion market was Daslu, a luxury goods store in the city of São Paulo, which was considered for a long time the “Temple of Luxury” or “Mecca for Fashion Designers”. Who was behind it since the 80's was the owner Eliana Tranchesi, whose life became the cover of magazines both in the positive and negative sides.

On the positive side, Eliana Tranchesi was in charge of the company's expansion. With an investment of R$200 million, Villa Daslu opened in 2005, a huge store measuring 17,000m² and whose annual revenue reached R$400 million.

On the negative side, the businesswoman's life was full of scandals that involved everything from the Federal Revenue to her arrest, being sentenced to the maximum sentence of 94.5 years for conspiracy, ideological falsehood and attempted and consummated embezzlement - import or export lawful goods without due tax payments. As a result of this denunciation, Tranchesi put his name on the list of rich Brazilians who lost almost everything. She died in 2012 from lung cancer.

5. Dr. Luiz Roberto Silveira Pinto

Dr. Luiz Roberto Silveira Pinto is probably one of the names on our list of rich Brazilians who lost almost everything but unknown; however, his story made headlines in the newspapers. Founder of the Samcil group, the then president of the health plan operator committed suicide when he despaired over his financial situation.

With a debt of approximately R$330 million, the Samcil group sought to resolve the indebtedness by disposing of part of the equity. His expectation was to raise around R$ 130 million; however, there were no buyers for the hospitals being offered. Other than that, the group's revenue would have dropped sharply, which also worried the businessman. Faced with this chaotic financial situation, Luiz Roberto Silveira Pinto, aged 75, commits suicide on April 4, 2011.

6. Chimbinha

Now that we remember the story of the 5 rich Brazilians who lost almost everything and ended up dying broke, let's talk about those who are alive, living with a very critical financial situation. And the first name on our list you know: the singer Ximbinha, former lead singer of the successful group Calypso.

Definitely, Ximbinha is not in its best moment. According to the 'Extra' portal, the singer owes approximately R$ 500 thousand to one of the banks where he has an account. The amount corresponds to two loans that the artist has in his name, one worth R$ 200 thousand and the other R$ 300 thousand. In addition, Ximbinha owes a developer around R$ 130 thousand and there are protests against securities on account of four bad checks, whose values add up to R$ 4.9 thousand. What a situation for the singer!

7. beautiful

In the past, the singer Belo has gone through few and good. In 2003, the pagodeiro was sentenced to six years in prison, of which he served four of them, for drug trafficking and association for trafficking purposes, but he turned it around and is now considered one of the greatest Brazilian popular artists. However, what you would never imagine is that Belo, even after having overcome several difficulties in his personal life, today finds himself in yet another new one: his critical financial situation.

With millionaire debts, owing R$7 million to former player Denílson, Belo is probably in one of the worst financial crises of his life. Due to this debt, his salary, as well as his assets, are pledged until he pays off everything he owes to the former athlete.

The singer's situation is so critical that he, along with his wife Gracyanne Barbosa, have been evicted from the house where they lived in Moema, a high-class neighborhood in the city of São Paulo. In a lawsuit that runs at the 5th Civil Court of Jabaquara (south zone of São Paulo), the owner asks Belo to pay the amount of R$ 184 thousand referring to late rent, IPTU, water and electricity bills, in addition to compensation for damage to the immobile.

8. Dedé Santana

Anyone who lived through the 80s and 90s will never forget the quartet formed by “Os Trapalhões”, whose laughter was guaranteed. No wonder, the program was a huge success, leaving all its members rich and famous. Unfortunately, today only 2 of the 4 remain alive, which are Renato Aragão and Dedé Santana. The first reaps good results from this time until today, but the second…

Despite having reaped good financial results at the time of “Os Trapalhões”, Dedé Santana faces a very complicated personal economic situation due to mistakes he made in the past. It is so complicated that the former Trapalhão player, who has just turned 84, receives financial assistance from his former co-worker, Renata Aragão. For example, his friend helps him pay for health insurance, which is not cheap considering his advanced age. How sad, right?

9. Adriano Emperor

If there is a player who loves to spend money, he is, without a doubt, Adriano Imperador. From customizing a luxury car with a 'trademark' to showing off his mansion on social media, the former athlete spares no effort to show his luxury life. However, as the saying goes, "who sees the face, does not see the heart". In the case of Adriano Imperador, it's more like "those who see social networks, don't see the financial situation".

With the comparison made, you can already understand that Adriano Imperador is another rich Brazilian who lost almost everything, right? Despite having made a fortune in the years he played in Europe and Flamengo, the former player is having financial problems, having to sell some of his assets, such as a black speedboat, which was highly valued, and his old mansion in Milan .

In addition, he lent his jet valued at R$ 3.5 million to singer Alexandre Pires so that he does not have to bear the monthly expenses of the aircraft. In other words, Adriano Imperador is definitely far from being at his best financial moment…

10. Emerson Fittipaldi

Formula 1 is one of the sports championships that earn the most money for its athletes. No wonder, it is not uncommon to come across cases of multimillionaire pilots, as is the case of Lewis Hamilton, considered one of the highest earners in the world of sport.

What is strange, however, is seeing cases of champion drivers going bankrupt – and that is precisely what is happening with Emerson Fittipaldi. The two-time F-1 world champion contracted a debt of more than 550 thousand reais and, due to this financial problem, had his accounts blocked. And what scares the most about all this: they were all zeroed!

We reached the final stretch of our list of rich Brazilians who lost almost everything, but there is still a lot to come! Among the next names are famous businessmen, artists, former owners of large companies and even a former player of the Brazilian national team. Check out!

11. Ronaldinho Gaucho

At the beginning of 2020, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, a former player for the Brazilian national team, was involved in a huge scandal in Paraguay along with his brother Roberto Assis, where they were carrying false passports, both of them going to prison. In a decision by Judge Gustavo Amarilla, upon payment of US$1.6 million in bail, the pair were released from the Agrupación Especializada in Asunción, where they were being held, and were transferred to the Hotel Palmaroga, chosen by the prosecution.

By having to disburse this millionaire amount to be released, Ronaldinho Gaúcho stuck his foot in bankruptcy, which was already close by. Months before being arrested in Paraguay, there were already news that the former player was in the worst. According to the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, he has 57 properties blocked, 4 of which are pledged, by the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul.

The court decision was an attempt to make the player pay an environmental fine of R$ 9.5 million due to a work without an environmental license carried out on his site, in Rio Grande do Sul. In addition, Gaúcho has R$ 7.8 million in protests in 3 registry offices in Porto Alegre. That is, if the former athlete's situation was already critical before he was arrested, imagine, then, how it is now...

12. Valesca Popozuda

Although she denies that she is bankrupt, Valesca Popozuda is part of the group of wealthy Brazilians who have lost almost everything. As some would say, talking even a parrot talks, but against evidence there are no arguments – and this is precisely the case of the successful funk artist.

Recently, Valesca Popozuda left Recreio, an upscale area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and went to live in the neighborhood of Abolição, in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. It was from this sudden change that the news that the funk artist was bankrupt began. Before the coronavirus paused the artists' concert schedule, it was already noted that Valesca had no scheduled shows.

According to the newspaper “Extra”, due to this critical moment of her career, she had to lower the value of her salary, but even so, she was facing difficulties in finding contractors. Will the scenario change after this health crisis passes and the concert schedule returns to normal?

13. Civita Brothers

In fact, in this case, it is not a single person, but two: Roberto and Richard Civita, former owners of Grupo Abril, which was inherited by their father and founder, Victor Civita. As a result of the poor management and dubious editorial quality of the Civita brothers, Grupo Abril, which was once among the largest in Latin America, ran the serious risk of closing its doors.

The administrative disaster of the Abril Group's heirs led to a situation of financial collapse, fueled by debts and bad deals that resulted in millionaire losses and hundreds of layoffs. On July 19, 2018, the Civita brothers left the command of Grupo Abril, and, in the following month, the company announced its request for judicial recovery after accumulating debts in the amount of R$ 1.6 billion. With all that said, there's no way Roberto and Richard Civita wouldn't be on our list of rich Brazilians who lost almost everything.

14. Edemar Cid Ferreira

Edemar Cid Ferreira is a Brazilian economist and banker, most notable for having been a director of Banco Santos. At the time he owned the banking institution, the businessman managed to raise a good fortune, but that did not last long in his hand. He lost a large part of his assets after being arrested in 2006 for fraudulent management and financial crimes, which would have led the entity under his command to bankruptcy.

After leaving losses of around R$ 1 billion, the former owner of Banco Santos had his assets seized, with his former mansion of just over 8000 m² recently sold for R$ 27.5 million. According to lawyer Pedro Amorim, director of the company D1 Lance Leilões, responsible for the mansion bidding, the former banker's house has a symbolic value for the bankrupt estate of Banco Santos, which now awaits the auction of the bank's loan portfolio valued at R$ 3 billion.

15. Eike Batista

Who doesn't know the story of Eike Batista, right?! The businessman, who was considered the seventh richest man in the world with a fortune estimated at US$ 30 billion by Forbes in 2012, lost practically all his assets, and one of his companies, the mining company MMX, was declared bankrupt by the Justice of the Rio de Janeiro recently.

But what, then, was the reason for its downfall? Their companies' results were lower than expected. OGX, its oil company project, got off the ground producing just 25% than the company itself expected. As a result, their other companies, which were all dependent on each other, also delivered unsatisfactory results. Faced with this situation, the stock market melted the values of Eike's companies, causing the businessman to lose 90% of his fortune in just over a year.

With Eike Batista, we end our list of rich Brazilians who lost almost everything. Which is fair, by the way, considering that he is part of the select group of people who have already won the title of the richest in our country. What an ending, isn't it?! Or will this story have a twist a la Donald Trump, who overcame 4 bankruptcies and is now the president of the United States?
