13. Great Plague of Milan: 60,000 deaths
With an estimated number of 46,000 victims, one of the biggest pandemics in the world that could not be left out of our list is the Great Plague of Milan.
This is a series of outbreaks of bubonic plague that hit the cities of northern Italy, which would have been carried by French and German soldiers after troop movements associated with the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648).
With this, the Venetian troops were infected with the disease and spread it in the north and center of the country.
In October 1629, the plague struck Milan, and although the city took effective public health measures, the plague was widespread, particularly after it relaxed during Carnival.
Consequently, there was a large surge in March 1630, which was followed by a third wave in the spring and summer of 1631.
Overall, Milan suffered around 60,000 deaths out of a population of 130,000, whereas this figure in the Republic of Venice was 46,000 victims out of a total of 140,000 inhabitants.
Some historians even believe that the drastic loss of life and its impact on trade resulted in the downfall of Venice as a commercial and political power.
