14. Aleppo – more than 5 thousand years

Unfortunately, the city of Aleppo, in Syria, gained prominence around the world for being the scene of intense battles between 2012 and 2016, which left much of the city in ruins and caused thousands of deaths. By the way, Aleppo became even better known in Brazil thanks to Kaysar, originally from the city, who was the first refugee to enter the BBB. News aside, it is a great sadness to know that Aleppo is currently in the state it is in, in ruins, since the place was once considered the most beautiful and elegant city in the world.

Who sees the situation of the city of Aleppo, in Syria, today, does not imagine that one of the oldest places in the world was once considered a beautiful and elegant city.

Located in northern Syria, being the largest city in the country, Aleppo was for centuries the largest city in Greater Syria, a historical-cultural region in the Middle East that comprises approximately the current states of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Furthermore, it was the third largest in the Ottoman Empire, after only Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in terms of distance, Aleppo is different in its identity, architecture and culture, all marked by a distinct historical-geographical context.
