There are people who have an inexplicable fear of flying. Whatever the reasons, who are we to judge, right? Now, just imagine these people facing the scariest airports in the world… It hurts to think about it!
One thing is for sure: even people who think they are not afraid of flying would be terrified of having to take off or land at one of the most scary of the world. After all, these places are so terrifying that there is no one to be calm in front of them.
There is everything you can imagine: from runways that are in places where the plane passes people 10 meters above their heads to those that are so short that they measure a tenth of the length of the standard. Yes, this is exactly what you read!
Now you understand how impossible it is not to feel butterflies when standing in front of the scariest airports in the world, right? But don't worry, you'll face them only if you want to, because now it's time to get to know who they are. So, you already know which airports you will pass far away!
10. Juancho E. Iraskin Airport (SAB)
First on our list of the scariest airports in the world is Juancho E. Iraskin Airport (SAB), located on the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba. But why is he here in our text? Among several reasons, the main one is the fact that it has one of the shortest commercial runways in the world – just 400 meters long.
Speaking of length, it is a problem, but the set in which it is inserted is what makes it gigantic. This is because danger arises due to the physical position of the airport, as the runway is surrounded by hills on one side and the ocean on the other. Even some experienced aviators are of the general opinion that Juancho E. Iraskin (SAB) is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, despite the fact that tragedies have never happened there.
09. Svalbard Airport (LYR)
Built during World War II, the Longyear causes mixed feelings in its passengers. At the main airport in Svalbard, Norway, which is considered one of the scariest airports in the world, you don't know whether to be terrified or jaw dropped by the beauty of the place. There is no one who is not impressed!
But why is it considered dangerous? Well, the main fact is that it has tracks that were built directly on a layer of permanent and thick ice. However, what was safe a while ago is no longer safe today due to global warming, which is already negatively impacting Longyear Airport. So much so that studies show that it will soon lead to a serious distortion of the path and in the future the airport will have to close.
08. Barra Airport (BRR)
Have you ever thought about having to land at an airport whose runway disappears twice a day? Strange, isn't it? But know that it exists! We are talking about Barra International Airport, also known as Barra Eollgari Airport, which is located in Scotland, at the northern end of the island of Barra, in the bay of Trey Mkhor.
The phenomenon happens because this, which is one of the scariest airports in the world, uses the beach as a runway, being the only one to do this in the four corners of the planet. Consequently, flight schedules vary according to the tide, since, when it is high, the runways can end up at the bottom of the sea.
07. Courchevel Airport (CVF)
Located in Courchevel, a ski resort in the French Alps, the airport that bears its name is known by the world of aeronautics for having one of the shortest runways in the world. With only 537 meters in length, this airport still has the aggravating factor of being located between mountains, forcing pilots to land the plane at an acute angle to reduce speed.
To top it off, Courchevel Airport has no approach procedures, which makes landings impossible when there is fog or low clouds. Adding this to the fact that it is close to a ski resort, that is, between mountains, which can greatly interfere with visibility, there is no denying that this is one of the scariest airports in the world.
06. Funchal Airport (FCN)
Another airport with a short runway for the account! Surrounded by the ocean on one side and high mountains on the other, Funchal Airport, on the small island of Madeira, in Portugal, is located in a place where strong gusts of wind are constant, increasing risk and turbulence and making flights unstable.
A curious fact about Funchal Airport is that, in addition to being one of the most dangerous in the world, it was renamed to Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport on March 29, 2017. This tribute to the legendary football player was due to the fact that that the athlete was born on the island. Interesting, isn't it?
05. Gibraltar International Airport (GIB)
Also known as North Front Airport, Gibraltar International Airport is a civil airport, serving the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. Considered one of the most dangerous in the world, the reason for this is that its runway passes through Winston Churchill Avenue – the busiest road on the island.
Well, that's exactly what you read! What seems unlikely is you being in your car driving through town and all of a sudden a plane showing up is entirely possible in Gibraltar. To get an idea, there are barriers and signs to control the movement of cars and they have to stop to wait for aircraft to take off or land. Have you thought?
04. Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM)
Of all the scariest airports in the world, Princess Juliana International Airport is probably the best known to everyone because it has become practically a tourist stop in Saint Martin. This is because the planes can pass from 10 to 20 meters above the heads of the people who are there, sunbathing “quietly” on the beach. Yes, quiet in quotes because it's practically impossible to stay calm when you have a giant aircraft passing over you, don't you agree?
Considered the main airport of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, Princess Juliana International Airport is extremely close to the edge of Maho Beach. For this reason, even with its modern structure, it is like one of the most dangerous in the world, because, in case of an accident there, the tragedy would be incalculable.
03. Toncontin International Airport (TGU)
Located 6 km from downtown Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Toncontin International Airport (also known as Teniente Coronel Hernán Acosta Mejía Airport) is considered the second most dangerous airport in the world. But reasons abound!
This civil and military airport is located in a valley surrounded by mountains, so the pilot has to make some turns to avoid a collision. In addition, the runway is quite short, making it necessary to stop the plane abruptly, and it is the same for both entry and exit of aircraft. So, would you face it?
02. Lukla Airport (LUA)
If Toncontin International Airport (TGU) is considered the most dangerous in the world, Lukla Airport, which receives the brave ones who want to get to know Mount Everest up close, is number 01 in this regard. Located at the highest point of a 2,800-meter mountain, its runway is 527 meters long, 20 meters wide and has an 11-degree slope.
In addition, this airport is located between a huge mountain that rises 900 meters at one of its headwaters. With this, landing becomes difficult because the pilot needs to navigate in mountainous terrain with strong winds that reduce visibility. To complicate matters further, radar or navigation devices do not work at Lukla Airport, meaning there are no modern air traffic controls. In other words, it is a true horror show for the pilots, with only the most experienced able to make this flight.
01. Santos Dumont Airport (SDU)
Finally, to end our text on the scariest airports in the world, a Brazilian could not be missing, could it? And the chosen one is Santos Dumont Airport, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Although the view is spectacular, as it has a privileged view of Corcovado, it is undeniable that just looking at the photo of the airport is scary. Check it out!
Santos Dumont Airport, in Baía da Guanabara, has one of the shortest runways in Brazil, just 1,323 meters long. If the plane does not brake, the stop will inevitably be at sea. That is, when in doubt, it's good to learn to swim!
With this message (who warns, a friend is!), we have reached the end of yet another list of ours. I hope you enjoyed it and stay tuned on our blog because there are many more interesting texts for you! See you.
