In 2019, contactless payment became part of Brazilians' lives, bringing more practicality, security and agility when shopping and paying for services and products! But, just as it brought advantages, it also brought losses such as fraud in payment by approximation!
So, today we're going to show you how fraud works with this payment method and show you how you can avoid falling for this fraud! Check out!
How do contactless payment frauds work?
Well, first of all, approximation payment works using cryptography technology, that is, with each transaction, a new code.
In this regard, the technology responsible for payment by proximity is NFC (Near Field Communication), translated as “communication by proximity field” that allows payments to be made without inserting the card into the machine.
And in addition, payments have a transaction limit where the password is not required, being R$200 on average.
That's because, it will depend on each financial institution to set the limits for payment by approximation, and more expensive purchases depend on a password!
So, approach payment fraud occurs when criminals take advantage of the large flow of people in urban centers and just fish for a card that is positioned in side pockets, approaching the card machine to charge.
This is because, in these means of payment by approximation, most do not ask for another identification factor to confirm the payment! So, be careful when you put your card away, so you don't fall for this big fraud of payment by approximation!
How to use contactless payment?
So, you can use it on a credit or debit card, smart bracelet and smartphone device. In this, the card machine also needs to use NFC technology!
So, for card payments, just inform that you want to make this payment method and the data is transmitted without needing a contact or password!
On the other hand, to use mobile approximation payments, you just need to register with your user and card on payment platforms available for Android and iOs such as Nubank and then start using approximation payments!
And yet, the payment made with smart watches occurs in the same way as the card and smartphone. They are: Santander Pass, BPP Tag, Ourocard bracelet, among others! So choose the one that is most advantageous to you and makes you feel more secure!

Use locking card sleeves
Finally, use frequency blocking card covers that prevent the card from communicating with the billing machine, ensuring the security you need against fraud!
It is important to mention that this fraud does not work with payment by approach with mobile devices, as they have more security than the card, since to validate the payment, it is necessary to identify with a password or biometric verification.
Furthermore, it is recommended not to leave cards in the hands of street vendors or merchants and, if possible, deactivate the NFC!
