What is the Social Energy Tariff and how does it work?

Well, the Social Energy Tariff is the way the Brazilian government found to help low-income families with their monthly expenses.

In recent years, tariff rates have become a constant concern for disadvantaged people.

Therefore, the Federal Government created the benefit to provide access to electricity to needy families.

So, the benefit applies a discount on the household electricity bill according to their electricity consumption. Discounts range from 10% to 65% of the total electricity bill.

Who is entitled to the Social Energy Tariff?

In principle, to have access to the benefits of the Social Energy Tariff, it is necessary for families to meet some basic requirements.

First, the family must be registered in the Cadastro Único system. Another requirement is to have an income less than or equivalent to half a minimum wage per member.

Families with disabled members who use electricity for treatment are also entitled. In these cases, the family income cannot exceed 3 minimum wages.

Finally, seniors aged 65 or over, and people with disabilities who receive the Benefit of Continued Provision are also entitled to the Social Energy Tariff.

Since January 2022, the inclusion of families that meet the requirements is automatic. For this to happen, the government and energy concessionaires use CadÚnico data.

Once you meet the conditions proposed by the government, no manual registration is required.

However, if you are entitled and do not receive the discount, just contact the energy dealership in your region. Just inform your NIS and the installation number of your electrical network.

How do I get the Social Energy Tariff?

In short, the benefit is intended for low-income people with an up-to-date registration in CadÚnico. If you do not meet these requirements, there is no way to request your inclusion.

But, if you are entitled to the benefit and still not receiving the discount, you can contact the energy distributor in your region.
