04. Thirteen Linden Trees – HDI: 0.795
Located in the West of Santa Catarina, Treze Tílias (in German Three-dimensional limestone) is a Brazilian municipality with an estimated population of 7,840 inhabitants in 2019 and an HDI of 0.795. Not surprisingly, it is among the 15 best cities in Brazil with less than 10,000 inhabitants thanks to its good performance in the index.
Founded on October 13, 1933 by immigrants from the Tyrol region (mainly from Austria, but also from Italy) who fled the severe economic crisis in Europe caused by the First World War, Treze Tílias today has a strong cultural influence from these people. Tyrolean culture is preserved in the dialect, in the typical Alpine-style architecture, in the traditional cuisine and in the folklore dance and song groups that liven up the town's festivals.
