17. Choeung Ek Death Camps
The Choeung Ek Extermination Camp dates back to a tragic but important period in Cambodia's history. Between 1975 and 1979, millions of innocent people were arrested, tortured and murdered by the Khmer Rouge regime, an episode that became known around the world as Cambodian Genocide. As for the death camp, it is believed that of the 17,000 victims who passed through its gates, only seven survived.
Knowing all the horrors the place has witnessed, it is inevitable not to get emotional when visiting the Choeung Ek Death Camps. After all, when seeing the skulls of thousands of victims up close, the tour becomes an impactful experience for even the least sensitive person. Therefore, if you are a fan of war tourism, it is good to prepare yourself emotionally before going to this destination, as there is more than necessary.
