02. Sachsenhausen
One of the greatest symbols of the horrors of World War II is, without a doubt, the concentration camps. These places were military confinement centers, set up on open land and surrounded by some other type of barrier, with permanent guards to keep prisoners of war and/or political prisoners. However, they were more of an extermination camp for the “enemies” of the Nazi government than anything else.
Among the various concentration camps that existed throughout Europe, one of the most famous and most important in Nazi Germany was Sachsenhausen, a must-see if you are in Berlin, the country's capital. There, you will see up close the horrors committed against the prisoners, who numbered around 200,000 people, many of whom died of starvation, acquired diseases, forced labor, the result of medical experiments or were executed by shooting or in gas chambers. In other words, an endless cruelty that deserves our attention.
