06. North Korea's illiteracy rate is almost zero
As incredible as it may seem, it's not all bad news in North Korea. In terms of illiteracy rate, the country is an example of how to do it, since its rate is practically zero. On the other hand, as we saw in our text on the incredible maps of Brazil, 6.8% of the Brazilian population over 15 years old is considered illiterate, with the Northeast region having an illiteracy rate that is more than double the national average. Our reality is sad, right?
Regarding education in North Korea, it is universal and funded by the state. However, among the students' duties is work in collective fields as free labor. This is because all North Koreans, whether adults or children, must benefit the country and do everything possible to help the Great Leaders improve the lives of the people. Therefore, for the dictatorial government, children working for free in fields is a valid form of collaboration.
