08. It is the number one country in persecution of Christians
We already know that the practice of religion is prohibited in North Korea. However, did you know that the country's capital, Pyongyang, was once known as “Jerusalem of the East” due to the intense and solid growth of Christianity in the region from the 19th century onwards?! So it is! However, the scenario is very different nowadays…
With the prohibition of religious practice followed by the obligation of devotion to the “juche” ideology, the North Korea has become the number one country in Christian persecution. Currently, it is estimated that there are 200,000 to 400,000 North Korean Christians, of which 50,000 to 70,000 are imprisoned in forced labor camps because they were discovered to be Christians. Furthermore, according to the defectors, 75% of North Korean Christians die because of their faith.
