09. Cairn De Barnenez – more than 6,800 years old

More than 6,800 years old, Cairn De Barnenez is a Neolithic monument located near Plouezoc'h, on the Kernéléhen peninsula, north of Finistère, in Brittany. Dating back to 4800 years before Christ, the site is considered one of the oldest megalithic monuments in Europe, as well as being one of the oldest man-made constructions in the world.

Like Stonehenge, Cairn De Barnenez is as enigmatic a monument as it is for the fact that some secrets were entombed within the site.

Just like Stonehenge, which we already talked about above, Cairn De Barnenez is a monument as enigmatic as it is. A faceless portrait – repeated and intriguing U-shapes – in frantic zig zags, as well as symbols engraved on stone slabs, which have resisted for more than 68 centuries, are some of the secrets that were buried inside the Barnenez Cairn. In fact, the site is home to 11 different tombs, added one by one over the centuries. What a mystery, right?!
