Both Pelé and Maradona took home the award, as the Brazilian won based on votes from a college of voters made up of Fifa members, journalists and coaches from around the world, while the Argentine won based on the poll of Internet. A curious fact is that, with the final result, Maradona ended up leaving the award in spite of himself and before Pelé received his award.

For those who don't remember, the dispute was between the son of former President George HW Bush (1989-1993) and the Democratic candidate Al Gore, then Vice President of Bill Clinton.

This election became known due to the controversy over the granting of the 25 votes in the Electoral College of Florida and the subsequent recount process in that state. However, even with this problem, Bush won the November 7 election by a narrow margin, with 271 Electoral College votes to Gore's 266 (with one voter abstaining from the official count).

Since we're talking about elections, how about remembering Vladimir Putin's in the 2000s? Although he had held the post since 1999, when Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned, the current president of Russia won the race the following year and was re-elected in 2004.

Since then, Putin has been in power in Russia. In 2008, for example, he was barred from running for a third term as, at the time, the country's constitution only allowed for two consecutive terms. Therefore, his ally Dmitri Medvedev would be his successor, which would lead to Putin's choice as the country's prime minister. Currently, he remains the president, and onlyI mandate is guaranteed until 2024.

If there was a crime that paralyzed the country, this is surely the bus 174 hijacking in Rio de Janeiro. Televised live, this episode refers to June 12, 2000, when the 174 bus was detained in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood for almost 5 hours, held at gunpoint by Sandro Barbosa do Nascimento, a survivor of the Candelária Slaughter.

Unfortunately, this episode had a tragic ending. After hours inside the bus, the kidnapper decided to leave the bus, using a hostage as a shield. As he descended, a policeman tried to shoot Sandro, but ended up missing his aim, and with that, the criminal shot his hostage in the back, who died instantly. Finally, he was asphyxiated by the police and did not survive.

Launched on April 22, 2000, the R$ 10 plastic banknote was in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil. It promised to have an increase of up to 4 times in its useful life, being also more resistant to counterfeiting, but the technology used was exported from Australia, resulting in a more expensive production cost. As a result, only 125 million banknotes were made available for purchase by the Central Bank and, due to any replacement, they soon became extinct.

Released on February 4, 2000, The Sims is a series of real-life simulation video games created by game designer Will Wright and produced by Maxis. Its success was such that, in March 2009, Electronic Arts announced that The Sims, as a franchise, had already sold over 100 million copies. Already in 2012, before the launch of The Sims 4, the franchise had surpassed the mark of more than 150 million games sold.

Obligatory music at all parties, Morango do Nordeste is, in fact, a song composed in 1987 by the Pernambucan duo Walter de Afogados and Fernando Alves. However, after 13 years of its composition, it became known thanks to the interpretation of the pagoda group led by the twin brothers Vavá and Márcio Duarte. And to this day the music is there, making the heads of several people!

If you are under 20 years old, you might not even know it, but Luciano Huck started in Band with his “Programa H”. By the way, it was there that the characters Feiticeira and Tiazinha (in fact, we talked about her in our text about the random celebrities who have already recorded a cd) came to light, bringing a new concept to stage assistants.

Well, after the resounding success of his program on Band, Luciano Huck was hired to be part of Globo's cast of presenters. Here, then, is the emergence of the program Huck's cauldron, whose first episode was on April 8, 2020. As you know, he is still going strong to this day!

Ah, the 90's! Certainly, there are programs that are extremely nostalgic for that period and that were part of our history. Among them, “Você Decide”, whose presenters were important names of Rede Globo, such as actors Antônio Fagundes, Lima Duarte and Tony Ramos, who presented the program for a longer period of time (from 1993 to 1998).

In the end, everything that starts ends and this was the case with “You Decide”. The interactive program, in which an episode told a fictional story, whose ending was chosen by viewers through telephone votes, ended on August 17, 2000, after eight years on the air.

Speaking of nostalgia, it's hard to find someone who lived through the 2000s and didn't fall in love with the soap opera "The Carnation and the Rose” from Rede Globo. Aired at 6:00 pm, the plot is an adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, and featured important artists such as Adriana Esteves, Eduardo Moscovis and Leandra Leal.

For those who don't remember the story, it was about the character Catarina Batista, a modern woman who, in the rigid São Paulo society of the 1920s, refuses the female role of housewife. However, she falls in love with Julião Petruchio, a man whose belief is that a woman should be the queen of the home. These two very different people live, then, a contradictory romance, which delighted their viewers.

Just like the soap opera “O Cravo e a Rosa”, another audiovisual piece of Brazilian entertainment that could not be left out of our list of things that are already 20 years old is the movie “The Auto da Compadecida“. It is certainly one of the most relevant films in the national market to date.

This dramatic comedy is based on the 1955 play Auto da Compadecida by Ariano Suassuna, with elements from O Santo e a Porca and Torturas de um Coração, both by the same author. Its success was such that, during the Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil, an event created by the Ministry of Culture, the film received awards for best director, best script, best release and best actor. One thing is fact: merit is not lacking!
