07. Typhus: 3 million deaths
The First World War, which began on July 28, 1914 and lasted until November 11, 1918, left many casualties along the way.
There were about 17 million deaths, including soldiers and civilians.
However, what nobody counted on were the consequences of that war, which not only generated a situation of extreme poverty, but also created the right environment for the spread of typhus.
More victims would come to exist…
As we have already mentioned, the post-First World War conditions left in Europe created an environment of extreme poverty, with a very precarious sanitation network and the spread of rats throughout the continent.
This scenario has become conducive to the development of typhus, which is transmitted precisely by fleas that bite these infected animals.
Because there were no minimum sanitary conditions at the time, the disease spread rapidly, killing more than 3 million people.
Even Winston Churchill had typhus, but survived the disease.
