08. Hong Kong flu: from 1 to 3 million deaths
As if the Asian flu that the continent had to face in 1957-1958 was not enough, Asia was facing a new flu outbreak 10 years later.
Called the Hong Kong Flu, the first recorded outbreak appeared on July 13, 1968 and, a few months later, killed an estimated 750,000 people.
Today, the exact death toll is not known, but it is estimated that between 1 and 3 million lives were taken by the disease, including half a million Hong Kong residents, which constituted 15% of its population at the time.
Transmitted by birds, especially free-range and unhygienic maids, the Hong Kong flu caused high fever, fatigue and joint pain.
With a rapid and overwhelming progression, the disease spread throughout the Asian continent, even reaching the American troops who were in the Vietnam War.
Incidentally, it was through them that the virus entered the United States in September 1968, which had a major impact on the conflict.
