09. Asian flu: up to 2 million deaths
In February 1957, the Asian flu emerged, one of the world's biggest flu pandemics.
The first case occurred in northern China and the disease spread very quickly around the world, advancing mainly to Asia, Oceania, Africa, Europe and the United States.
Two months after the first medical report of the Asian flu, the virus arrived in Singapore and Hong Kong, where it spread to other parts of the world.
It took about 10 months for the disease to be present in all countries.
As medical technology was more developed at the time, it was possible to detect the agent quickly and work on new solutions, such as vaccines, the main ones responsible for containing the flu outbreak.
Unfortunately, even so, immunizers were not manufactured in sufficient quantity for all those infected and, consequently, the death toll reached around 2 million people.
