11. Great Plague of Marseille: 100,000 deaths
The third city taken by Great Plague was Marseille, located in the south of France and considered the main French port for commercial exchange with the East.
It was through him that the Black Death entered the fourteenth century and, four centuries later, returned brought by the merchant ship Grande Santo Antônio from Sidon, Lebanon.
When docking in Marseille, several crew members were dead, and the ship needed to be quarantined by the port authorities.
However, as we well know, economic pressure is capable of reversing any sanitary measures.
In Marseille, it was no different.
Powerful merchants in the city interested in the ship's cargo of silk and cotton put pressure on the authorities, who relaxed the measures.
A few days later, the disease broke out in the city and hospitals were quickly overwhelmed.
To prevent the spread of the plague, the death penalty was even applied to anyone trying to leave Marseille.
In two years, the disease killed 100,000 people, but, fortunately, it was the last bubonic plague epidemic in Europe.
