14. Swine flu (H1N1): 16 thousand deaths
Right before the Ebola outbreak, there was the H1N1 in 2009, popularly known as Swine Flu.
As the name implies, it is a zoonosis, that is, a disease that can be transmitted to humans by animals, but, in this specific case, by pigs.
Contagion occurs in people in direct contact with these animals, such as veterinarians or farmers, who, through respiratory secretions, inhale infected particles.
H1N1 was the first major pandemic cause of the 21st century.
The virus emerged in Mexico in 2009 and, in a very short time, spread across the world, killing a total of 16,000 people.
In Brazil, the first case was confirmed in May of that year and, according to the Ministry of Health, fatal cases reached 557, which led to the country leading the number of deaths from the pandemic.
