05. Spanish Flu: 40 to 50 million deaths

Nowadays, much is heard about the Spanish flu due to the current COVID-19.

This is because both diseases have certain similarities, especially with regard to rapid transmission and contamination.

However, lucky for us, the latest number of coronavirus victims (400,000 deaths) represents only 1% of the deaths caused by the Spanish flu.

Among its victims, the ex-president of Brazil Rodrigues Alves, who died in January 1919, even before he was able to assume his second presidential term.

The Spanish flu caused 40 to 50 million people to die; among them, former president Rodrigues Alves, who died even before assuming his second presidential term.

Considered one of the most resistant diseases of all time, the Spanish flu was a variation of the Influenza virus (commonly associated with recurrent flu and H1N1).

The first cases began in 1917 and, although its name leads us to conclude that it originated in Spain, the truth is that the disease originated in the United States.

At the time, the country did not disclose the information so as not to weaken its army that was in World War I.

It was neutral Spain that did this and, therefore, became known as the birthplace of the disease.
