Thinking about helping you understand which path to follow, this post was created. You will see a comparison between the two and be able to make your decision between Fies or Prouni.
What is Fies and how does it work?
Fies is a financing program, hence the name Fies, which means Student Financing Fund.
It is a government initiative created in 2001 where people who are unable to pay the course fees can study without paying.
Through it, the person only starts paying for college after finishing the course and starting to work in the field.
There are two types of financing:
- 50%: in this case you must pay half the monthly fee and the financing pays the other half;
- 100%: on the other hand, this is the most popular option, as you won't pay anything during college.
Basically, Fies is a program where you will finance your studies and pay after completing the course.
What is Prouni and how does it work?
Firstly, Prouni, unlike Fies, is not financing, but a scholarship.
What is the difference in practice? The scholarship is a benefit of the program. So, you won't have to pay anything when you graduate.
Just like other government aid, here you can get 50% or 100%. So, depending on the course you are looking to take, you need a good grade to get the scholarship.
What are the advantages of Fies?
There are several advantages to being able to participate in Fies, here are the main ones:
- Your studies are funded: it doesn't matter if you managed to finance the full amount or just half, you will be able to study with one less thing to worry about.
- There is a longer period to pay for the course: unlike bank financing, with Fies, the period is extended. This way, you can pay for the course without much difficulty.
- It helps you spend less during the course: if you get a partial scholarship, during the course it will significantly reduce the monthly fee. Paying only when you graduate.
Therefore, it is clear that Fies is a very important program, especially for those who are unable to pay the course's monthly fee.
What are the advantages of Prouni?
Prouni also has many advantages that you need to know, so you will decide whether to choose Prouni or Fies.
- You can take an excellent course: private universities that are part of Prouni always have a high grade in the MEC. Which means you will have quality education.
- It greatly reduces the cost of college: receiving the Prouni scholarship, you will not have to pay the monthly fee if you get the 100% scholarship. And, in the case of partial, the cost is also reduced a lot.
- You don't need to pay anything after completing the course: unlike Fies, which needs to pay when you graduate, with Prouni you won't have to pay anything after completing your degree.
- Increase your income: with a higher education degree you will get a job where you will earn much more than you earn today.
Now that you know all the positive points of these government programs, you need to understand how to sign up for them. Continue reading and see this information.
How to sign up for Fies?
To be able to enroll in Fies, you must have taken the Enem at least once since 2010. Your score must also have been higher than 450 points.
On the other hand, you need your entire family's income to not exceed 3 minimum wages per person.
To do this, add up the income of everyone who works in your house and divide it by the number of people who live in the house. The value must be lower than R$ 3,906.00
Registration is done via the official Fies website (https://sisfiesportal.mec.gov.br/) and there is a deadline to register, so pay attention to the dates.
Then just log in using the government system and fill out the entire form.
This way, you can sign up to compete for places in private educational institutions.
How to sign up for Prouni?
Every government student program selects people through Enem, the largest and most important entrance exam in Brazil.
This test is to take young people to public universities, but, as there are few places at federal universities, there is Fies and Prouni.
Through it, you can enter a private university at a discount.
To be able to enroll, you must have scored at least 450 points on average. Another mandatory requirement is not to have failed the essay and not to have taken the exam as a trainer.
Furthermore, as Prouni is for low-income people, you need to prove that you are unable to pay for the course.
Namely, each scholarship has its own criteria, as you can see below:
- Full scholarship: family income cannot exceed 1.5 minimum wage per person (R$ 1,953.00);
- Partial scholarship: adding up all household income, you cannot exceed 3 minimum wages (R$ 3,906.00)
Regardless of the scholarship, you must have completed high school at a public school or with a full/partial scholarship at a private school.
Register on the website https://prouniportal.mec.gov.br, then just choose the colleges where you want to study. Good luck!
