If one day you decide to change your residential address, it's good that you change it for one that is in one of the cities that are better prepared for the future. This is because, with the advancement of the internet and our dependence on it, in addition to the increasingly rapid changes in society as a whole, it is increasingly necessary to stay tuned and ready for tomorrow. But not only us, but also the cities!
By 2050, 2 out of 3 people in the world will live in cities. It is good, therefore, that they are prepared. After all, how will they react to economic and social problems and climate change? Are they prepared to protect their citizens?
Thinking about this, Oliver Wyman consultancy made a ranking of the most prepared cities in the future. So, if you want to live somewhere else in the world, it's important that you keep this list in mind if you don't want to jeopardize your quality of life.
10th – Sydney
Considered the largest and most populated city in Australia, Sydney became known worldwide for having hosted the 2000 Olympic Games.
Thanks to the mild climate, the coastline full of beautiful beaches and the bustling nightlife, the capital of the state of New South Wales is one of the main tourist destinations in Australia.
However, many are mistaken if they think that Sydney is just another tourist destination. In reality, the city has a lot to offer its residents, being one of the best cities to work in Australia.
The quality of life in the city is incomparable to any other Brazilian city, with first-rate public services, security and education. In terms of technology, Sydney does not disappoint its residents.
With so many qualities, it's no wonder that the city is on our list of the 10 cities most prepared for the future.
9th – Berlin
It is undeniable the fact that history brought deep marks in the city of Berlin, in Germany. Among them, those of the Cold War and, mainly, those of the Second World War, which made the city one of the main destinations for those looking for war tourism.
The positive side of these cruel stories that Berlin went through is that the city managed to reinvent itself even after so many tragedies.
Considered one of the 10 most prepared cities for the future, Berlin attracts the attention of any tourist thanks to its excellent functioning and its city quality. For example, it's impossible not to be enchanted by its impeccable public transport system.
With many parks and green areas, it is in the capital of Germany that most of the multinationals and large German companies are located. In this way, finding work in Berlin is not a problem, as the options are the most varied.
8th – Boston
Founded by the British in 1630, Boston is one of the main educational hubs in the United States, with higher education institutions such as the Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.
In addition, the New England School of English, considered one of the top 5 English language schools in the world, is also located in Boston. In other words, education is not lacking there.
Thanks to the presence of elite universities, the capital of the state of Massachusetts attracts some of the brightest minds in the world. Precisely because of its high educational level, Boston has come to be considered one of the cities most prepared for the future.
Finally, it's not just education in the city that also caught the attention of consultancy Oliver Wyman. The business ecosystem, a criterion that measures, for example, the number of startups that appear compared to the number of inhabitants, also earned Boston a score of 10.
7th – Amsterdam
Who doesn't dream of visiting Amsterdam, right? Known mainly for being a progressive city, the place is the dream destination of most tourists.
However, think with us: if the capital of Holland is already excellent for tourism, imagine, then, for living? So it is! Indeed, Amsterdam offers a lot to its residents and has even more to offer, as it is one of the cities most prepared for the future, according to a survey carried out by consultancy Oliver Wyman.
In the eyes of the world, Amsterdam only stands out for its public transport and the encouragement of bicycles. But its positive points go far beyond that!
The Dutch city stands out both for the digitization of government and for encouraging the creation of new companies. It is even one of the places in the world where there are the most successful startup incubators, promoting solutions to global problems with the advancement of technology.
Friday – Stockholm (70.4)
The capital of Sweden could not be left out of our list of cities most prepared for the future. Stockholm, for example, has made major investments to improve and encourage its public transport, in addition to using clean fuels for a large portion of its buses and commuter trains.
Stockholm also stands out for the fact that 52% of its energy comes from renewable sources. Also, it received the maximum score with regard to the government's digitization criterion, which made its public services fast and of quality. Very different from Brazil, isn't it?
We have reached the middle of the text and now the other 2 cities are more prepared for the future. Do you have any guesses? Spoiler: there is no Brazilian city below. It was to be expected, right?
5th – Paris (71.0)
Like Amsterdam, another dream destination for most tourists is Paris. Getting to know the architectural beauty of the French capital, “walking around” its streets and, mainly, getting to know the Eiffel Tower, the symbol of the city, is part of the imagination of many people.
But Paris is not just a great tourist destination. As much as there is in the city one of the 10 most visited tourist attractions in the world, it is also one of the most prepared places for the future.
So prepared that Joichi “Joi” Ito, director of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), stated in 2013 that “the city of the future must be like Paris”. This is because, despite being very old, the French capital is futuristic as it has several small cities within it.
For example, you can find everything you need within walking distance of where you are. In addition, there is a subway at the four corners of the city, which makes the car expendable in everyday life in Paris.
4th – San Francisco (71.9)
Considered the financial, cultural and transportation center of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region with more than 7.4 million people, the municipality of San Francisco, in the United States, is also one of the cities most prepared for the future.
This is mainly due to the same reason that put Amsterdam on this list: its high level of startups with tangible proposals to solve problems around the world.
Located in Silicon Valley, San Francisco is the city that concentrates the largest startup ecosystem in the world. To give you an idea, companies like Uber, Google and Airbnb were created there and there are still promising businesses that will most likely achieve success in the near future.
With this number of companies, in addition to its more than 30 international financial institutions, San Francisco has become the eighteenth richest city in the world and the ninth richest in the United States. No wonder it's on our list.
3rd – New York (72.7)
Since we mentioned San Francisco, how about we talk about New York, the most populous city in the United States? It, as it should be, is one of the most prepared cities in the world, mainly because it is one of the main, if not the main, economic and financial center in the world.
Its importance in this respect is such that New York has been ranked first among cities worldwide in attracting capital, business and tourists. After all, who never imagined rubbing the testicles (yes, testicles!) of the Wall Street bull in search of a lot of money in life, right?
As far as its infrastructure is concerned, there is nothing to complain about. For example, the New York City Hospitals and Health Corporation (HHC), which operates its public hospitals and clinics, is considered the largest municipal healthcare system in the United States.
In addition, New York surpassed Boston in terms of education and currently has the largest public and private education system in the United States. The only drawback is in relation to public transport, which, although it serves five million people daily, is very complicated to use.
2nd – London (75.6)
Capital of England and the United Kingdom, London is the main financial center of Europe. Even with the BREXIT, which was the official departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, England, as well as its capital, maintained its importance on the continent.
In addition to this economic importance, London also pleases with regard to culture. Considered one of the main cultural centers in the world, the city is many in one.
People, industries, parks, large enterprises coexist in the metropolis that has learned to add up its differences, attracting great opportunities and human capital. For this very reason, there is no way London would not be on our list of cities most prepared for the future.
1st – Singapore (75.8)
One thing is for sure: if Singapore has a problem, you can be assured that it will not be money. Known as “The Pearl of Asia”, this Asian city-state is now one of the largest financial centers in the world and was elected as the fourth richest country in the world, surpassed only by Qatar, Luxembourg and Macau.
It is therefore not surprising that the city is number 1 when it comes to preparing for the future. An example is the fact that the government limited the increase in the car fleet and invested heavily in mass transportation. This, in turn, ensures better use of space and avoids congestion, one of the main villains of quality of life.
And so, now that we've finished our text on the cities most prepared for the future, have you defined one to call yours at some point in your life? You can be sure we have!
