Although the contactless card is becoming more and more popular, the check remains a very popular form of payment. And even today, many people have doubts about how to fill out a check correctly. Filling in a wrong check can lead to many problems, such as fraud and even bank refusal.

Therefore, in today's article we will explain everything to you. From how it works to how to properly write a check. Continue reading and check it out!

What is a check and how does it work?

A check is nothing more than a credit instrument or a money order. That is, a form of payment in cash. The person receiving the check can deposit it in the bank and receive that money in their account.

Post-dated checks also exist. This modality allows you to make split purchases. It works like this: the issuer of the check puts later dates and the amount is only debited on that date. However, this is not regulated. Therefore, use post-dated checks only at stores you know and trust.

For the check to be debited, the owner must have the amount in the account on the day noted on the check itself. If not, it is considered bottomless.

Bad checks can get you into big trouble. The person who issued the check may have their CPF restricted and their name sent to the CCF, the Registry of Issuers of Checks without Funds.

The question of the date on the check is one of the most common mistakes. Or, still, not inserting the date on the check, making it impossible for the paper to be debited. In addition, other common errors are different numbers in words and also unsigned checks.

Mistakes like this can delay payments and even create problems at the bank for the issuer. Therefore, it is very important to be attentive when filling out your check.

How to write a check step by step

We will give you the step by step for you to fill out your check correctly:

Fill in the numerical value

In this part, it is necessary to put the full value of the purchase, in numbers. Also, to avoid fraud, it is important to insert the tic-tac-toe game before and after the numbers.

Put the value in words

Here it is important to be very careful to put the same number in words as in the numeric. One of the most common reasons for bounced checks is number mismatch. Also, to avoid fraud, if there is space left, put a line next to the written number, as well as the number in parentheses. This prevents anyone from writing after filling it out.

Enter the name of the person who will receive the check

This part is key to preventing fraud. Although this field is not mandatory, it is more confirmation that the check goes to the right person.

Fill in place and date

The location is not mandatory on the check, but the date is. If a check goes to the bank without a date, the chances of it being declined are high.

sign the check

The penultimate step is the most important. Without your signature your check will not be accepted at the bank. It is the signature that confirms your transaction. In addition, it must be similar to the signature on the card filled in when opening the account.

cross the check

Finally, one more tip to avoid fraud is to cross the check. Placing two diagonal lines across the check indicates that it can only be deposited into an account. This is a security measure widely used to prevent loss and theft.

Now that you know how to write a check correctly, your checks will never be refused by the bank again. If you still have questions about why your checks might bounce, check out our recommended content below.
