With just 1,609 inhabitants, Lagoa dos Três Cantos stands out when it comes to the smallest cities to live in thanks to its HDI of 0.789. Located in Rio Grande do Sul, this small municipality has a curious fact: the majority of its population speaks the German dialect Riograndenser Hunsrückisch. Due to its historical importance, the state's chamber of deputies voted in 2012 in favor of the official recognition of this dialect as part of the intangible cultural heritage to be preserved and protected.
